Registered User Posts: 115 07/16/2009 19:28	Tags : None If you are traveling down to Tunica on I-55, be warned that some of the rest stops are not open. The only rest stop left in Arkansas on I-55 is the Welcome center, near the Missouri border. It is finally completed and is pretty nice. The two rest stops in the middle of the state are gone. The buildings have been removed. Missouri isn't doing much better. The rest stop at the Arkansas border is closed, as is the one above Cape Girardeau. I didn't notice if the southbound stop 45 miles from Arkansas is eliminated. The Missouri rest stops don't create much of a problem, since you are never too far from a McDonald's or Boomland. In Arkansas there aren't too many options between Osceleo and West Memphis.

Registered User Posts: 277 07/21/2009 06:56	We have discussed this topic quite a bit over the last week!! We drove from St. Louis to Tunica and then went down to the Florida coastline. There are so many rest stops closed all over the place. I couldn't figure it out as so many looked fine and didn't appear to be having any construction work done on them. Also in many places, the rest stops on both sides of the highway were closed. Normally when there is work being done on one rest stop, the one in the opposite direction will still be open. When we got to Florida there was a big article in the paper about how many states are closing their rest stops for financial reasons. It said that it cost between $220,000 and $250,000 per year to operate and maintain a rest stop. That sure seems high, but that is what they said. Truckers were really complaining as they use the rest stops as places to park the truck and sleep overnight. Last Edited By: LBinStL 07/21/2009 10:28. Edited 1 time.

It seems as if they have been working on the big one in Arkansas for ages, I was glad to read it is finally finished! When we went to Oklahoma on the 10th we had the shock of our life while we "tried" to stop at the rest stop by Lebanon MO on I-44 going South. In all the Missouri rest stops we have ever been to the cars go to the right and the big trucks go to the left and park in front. WELL NO MORE, so pay attention folks! We automatically went to the right and we see a bunch of small nice pavilions for you to sit and eat your lunches you have packed but only see spaces for trailers and the big trucks, all the way around, no car spaces. We had to leave, no space for cars and no way to get to the spaces in front. Unfortunately the people in cars will have alot longer walk with their coolers and lunch or food items, this is really going to be a hardship on older people with such a far walk. The next rest stop was not a new one yet so we had no problem only thing it was about 50 miles farther. On the way home we paid close attention and the cars went to the front or left and they had the sense to put some pavilions up close to the front here. This time we did not need a pavilion to sit and eat lunch though. Actually I think if they make big changes like this, they need to post BIG signs, ones that catch your attention. I think MODOT must have had the same engineer design these new rest stops as the one that designs the stalls, make them barely wide enough to maneuver in and put the huge toilet paper holder right next to the stool, geezo! This almost applies to ever public restroom there is, have a large size woman design a Ladies restroom, and I forgot to mention, who are the dummies that install what the engineer designs, locks are supposed to meet, not have a half inch difference, ever try to sit on a potty with your purse hanging around your neck because the purse/bag hangers are missing and you are leaning forward trying to hold the door shut???? Sorry for the rant! Kathy
