We might as well give up, the Census folks came by my house Friday afternoon, she showed her badge, ask a
question, handed me a piece of paper and left.
The paper was from the Census folks explaining some things, it was written in...........................English and Spanish. This is from our on government. |

Well, I was going to edit my post but there is no edit "button" here. I was going to fix my spelling error and tell you the number of the form the
girl left me. Its a D-31. Anyway, I don't guess it matters.

YES CHARLES, it does matter! I agree, this is the United States of America, we speak English. BUT, If they are going to put it in Spanish they should
put it in every other language also!

A person from the census came by my house about 3 weeks ago and handed me that form also. I asked why they were coming around already and he said they are
just checking to make sure there are really addresses that are on their list and that people live there.
If this was supposed to be a cost saving act so they don't send out millions of census forms to bogus addresses, I think their actions are nuts. I'm sure it is cheaper to send the census to wrong addresses than to pay a guy to drive around a rural area checking houses. Some of the houses are a half mile to a mile in between. I'm sure they burn up more gas going between them than mailing the census. Plus the guy gets $14 an hour to check.

A lady from the Census came to our house a couple weeks ago, too. Just to check on our address, and give us the little paper you are talking about. What a
waste of time and money. I would say, that it would be quicker to phone everyone, but,......................we wouldn't be able to understand the person
on the other line!
 I'm sure they wouldn't be speaking in
English!

Wonder if I can file a discrimination claim for not having it written in german too.....
We too had a lady stop, though she did not stop at my house...gee, wonder why? I happen to 'spot' her in my neighbors driveway, thought that maybe it was the property appraiser.... anyhow, I 'hollered' over and gave her hell for parking two wheels of her car on my lawn over my sprinklers... she moved the d$%# vehicle in a hurry, and I guess she got enough confirmation to know that 'somebody' was alive at my street address and there was no need to stop by..... |

Jay Leno had a funny line when California had the proposal on the ballot to make English the official state language: "The overwhelming response was 'Si'!" I am a reasonably open minded individual and I would like to think I have compassion for people who have come to this country due to extreme hardships. The term "Ugly American" was/is associated with the American tourist who was perceived as loud, arrogant, demeaning, thoughtless and ethnocentric. My Father was a good man but when he traveled to Europe he thought that when the people didn't understand him it would help to talk louder. The issue I think most of us have is that the people we consider problematic are not tourists or visitors. They have settled in this country whether legally or not and their refusal to adapt has created a situation where "we the people" have decided to allow them to function at our inconvenience. Now, that is ugly! Per the Census: Many, many moons ago when I was just a wee lad I was a letter carrier with the USPS. We were asked to help with the census by identifying the house addresses and things like multi- family dwelling with a single address such as 439 and 439 ½ Maple St., or apartments and duplexes. Our data was compiled and presented to the Census people who did in person interviews on just a small percentage of the people and did the rest by mailed forms. I had several census workers accompany me on my rounds because I knew the area and could give a heads up on houses with vicious dogs and/or children.

Berferd77, sounds like they were using a little common sense then. Gee, when the Government gets involved they really add to the mess don't they? It
sounds like now they are doing a census to get ready to do a census, shoot in a few years they will probably then send another person around later to make sure
that the houses are still there and people still live there. Shoot, leave it to the polititions and soon we will be doing a census on a yearly basis.
