Left Atlanta 5am Friday bound for T-town! Traffic not too bad at that hour for Atlanta and smooth sailing to Birmingham and I-22 corridor right to Memphis.
We stayed at Harrahs casino hotel (our favorite due to convenience). They let us check in at 11:15a and this old gal was sitting at her first machine by
11:30!
Nah......I wasn't anxious to play or anything guys, I just
heard that the casinos were all going broke and badly needed us to make a contribution and boy did we make a contribution!
We hadn't been to Tunica for about 10 months and found some changes. The Sports bar upstairs wasn't open until 5 pm but Delta Blues is now open for
breakfast and lunch. DH headed to the center bar for a few Miller 64's and some video poker while I wandered around looking to see if anything was new.
The only new thing I really saw at Harrahs was 4 Wizard of Oz machines ( 2 & 2 back to back) and one was out of service the entire time we were there.
There were a fair number of people in the casino for early afternoon Friday.
We took a break at 5p and went to have dinner at Paula's. There were probably 50-60 people in line to pay but it moved quickly and we very shortly were
enjoying some good old southern food. I'm LOL folks cause this is usually what I cook all the time. Had a very nice meal and passed on dessert with just
no place to put it. Returned to the casino floor and took up the challenge once again. I had several nice hits on various machines throughout the day and
evening but unforunately nothing 'life altering.'
We headed to the hotel about 10 p to get some much needed rest. Room was nice as usual and I do enjoy having both a frig and micro. The only complaint I have
with this hotel is the lack of a magnifying mirror in the bathroom (old eyes you know).
We were both awake by 6:30 Saturday morning so up and at em again. DH loves breakfast at Paula's, so back again to use up more of those comps. Drove to
Sheraton and played there for about 3 hours with 2 nice hits and decided to walk over to the Shoe. We rarely go or play here as I don't feel they have the
greatest selection of the type of machines I like. We decided to have a snack at the snack bar in the back and ordered slices of pizza. They were excellent
and I'm not a huge pizza fan. Since it was extremely cold, DH went for the car and we returned to Harrahs. He decided to go up for a nap as we had a full
night planned but oh no I figured I was probably behind on my "contributions" so I went back to the casino....where else?
I played Monoply for a couple of hours and DH was back and ready to head to
Sam's Town. We had tickets for the Olivia Newton John concert and we were getting concerned about the weather. It was raining and sleet was really
falling on the way there. Between that and the roaring wind it was absolutely bitter outside. Sam's Town was packed and we were suprised as the weather
was so bad. This is my least favorite casino in Tunica and I found nothing here to change my mind. I need see 2 of the new Star Trek machines and nobody was
playing them! This was a suprise and as I hadn't tried them yet sat down to play. Well a quick $50 in both brought absolutely nothing....nada! Now I
understoood why they weren't being played. Both the buffet and the restaurant upstairs (can't remember the name) had lines going to eternity and we
quickly decided that wasn't us. We went to the little sandwich/snack place in the lobby and had a great supper. DH had a club and I ordered the shrimp
fried rice. The girl at the counter said the rice was made at the Oriental restaurant and brought over? Anyway, it was fab and there was enough to truly feed
3 people! We wandered around and played for a bit and then headed to the back to the concert arena about 7:45p. People were already heading in. It
wasn't a bad set-up for a concert and the acoustics were quite good. She took the stage pretty promptly and sang every song for the entire show. I
thought she was good and DH thought she was excellent (he's a bigger fan than I). There were many many empty seats and supposedly it had been a sell-out.
Evidently the weather did keep people away. Decided to head back to home base right after the concert. DH left me at the inside entrance and went for the car
while I waited and waited and waited some more. 25 minutes of scraping ice and snow enabled him to finally get the windshield clear enough to see. I walked
outside and thought, "you've got to be kidding me!!!!!"
Made it back safely but very slowly. The roads were horrendous.
Harrahs was extremely busy when we arrived and DH could not get a seat at the bar and after about an hour decided to head back to the room. I wandered around
trying to find a vacant seat and played for another couple of hours and called it a night. I literally 'slip/slided away' all the way to the hotel.
It was flat out miserable!
Awake early Sunday morning as usual. Headed to Paula's for her Sunday brunch and it was full of people at 11:30. Excellent meal as always. It was time
to hit a few other casinos and use up the rest of our free play. Headed to Resorts and I swear they were giving away Fort Knox! Mobs of folks everywhere.
Played probably 8 different machines and won some and lost some. On the way out I saw this huge line of people running from almost the front of the casino to
the cashier's cage. Come to find out they were in line to get this free really 'chintzy' looking vinyl clock!
Oh well, each to their own. Left Resorts and headed to Bally's to use free
play. Bally's was also very very busy. I noticed that they had the newer version of the Wizard of Oz machines and decided to give it a try. I waited
about 15 minutes for a machine and sat down to try my luck. Personally, I don't think these machines are nearly as much fun as the originals....but
that's just my humble opinion. After several hours it was time to face the cold again and head back to base. All of the casinos were the busiest on
Sunday. We were amazed at the number of people there. How could they possibly be in trouble as they keep professing???? Because we both still work we are
rarely on a gambling trip during the week except for a possible Friday or Monday to extend the weekend. For those of you that do go mid-week, is it different
now than it used to be during the week? Back at Harrah's I had the urge to play the old OZ and miracle of miracles there was a seat available. I played
for several hours and had a few decent hits (enough to recoup from the previous day anyway) I cashed out 3 times on two machines for a total win of roughly
$1300 with input of about $400.
DH came to collect me and we were off to 37 for dinner. I had lobster ravoli and DH had a filet. Both dinners were just fine but certainly not fine dining.
We have eaten here before and felt the same way. Now please know that neither of us are food snobs but do want quality over quanity in a good restaurant.
I've had many meals just as good in local medium type restaurants. The saving grace is that we didn't pay for it.
Back to gambling and fighting the crowds. I did find multiple machines at Harrahs that were not working the entire 3 days. Either they weren't reading
cards or wouldn't accept money. It is mind boggling to me that a casino can have that many machines inoperable over a 3 day weekend?????
Headed to bed around 11p and to pre-pack for the morning departure. Up by 8a and prepared to say goodbye to T-town. Filled up for the trip home on
Paula's good breakfast and hit the road.
We had a really fun trip and came home with about half of what we took and only paid for one meal in 3 days and had a comped room. Easy trip home with clear
roads and bright sunshine (even if it was freezing). Not sure when our next gambling trip will be. Like others we're not going nearly as frequently and
also due to the fact that I've dropped from 4 days a week to 2 days at work. It does make a difference. So, we are being much more selective in our trips
and trying to wait longer to go.......yea, it kills me guys but you gotta do what you gotta do, right? Sorry this is so long. Happy traveling and gambling to
all!
June

Glad it wasn't too bad going back home for you.
