That's terrible news! I found something on the Fox 13 in Memphis website and it said there were 42 people on the bus and they were on their way to take
the people to the airport when it happened. It happened at Old Highway 61 and Casino Strip Blvd. Sounds like it was a really bad accident. It always seems
like there are so many terrible bus accidents all over the country and they are always casino trips. It's sad...people just out having fun and then that
happens.

They showed a picture of the bus on tv, and yes, it was one of their shuttle buses.
This is from the CommercialAppeal: As of 1:15 p.m., the Regional Medical Center in Memphis reported only four people involved in the crash were at the hospital, but they had expected more and were told some were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto. Ayoka Pond, spokesman for Baptist Memorial Hospital, said 27 passengers from the bus accident were brought to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She said the hospital staff went into emergency mode and called in extra staff to take care of the patients being brought to the hospital. "The majority of the patients have minor and non-life threatening injuries and will be treated and
released. One patient is in critical condition, one is going to surgery and at this point, we anticipate that about five will be admitted for
observation," Pond said in a statement.
I just read where there are now four peope dead. Gosh, I hope there are no more. The loss of one life is too many.

This was NOT a regular shuttle. It was the Harrah bus which runs from the Tunica Airport to the casinos for charter flights.

I'm sure that all of our thoughts and prayers are with these poor innocent people that were just out to have fun. Hopefully they all get proper treatment
at the hospitals and can return home soon. From the looks of that bus I think Harrah's needed to get a new one a long time ago. These things seem to happen
so often to buses....private like Harrah's or public like Greyhound. They need better and more safety codes to go by and need to be sure they are inforced
properly.

such a tragedy for the families of those who will killed. and an upset for the others on the bus and their families. it will sure disrupt their lives. I
don't know how many of the people still in the hospital were seriously hurt. I hope they all get home soon and safely.
the link to the news given said there were 3 buses going back to the airport. seems Harrah's has charter flights and buses from a lot of places. we stayed at the Terrace last week. going to other casinos and to Tunica we were driving those roads, in good weather, and never thought of such a thing happening. |

New Information: Mississippi Bus Crash Kills 3, Survivors to Return Home
Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Leslie White identified the dead as Charlotte Carros, 63, of Eutawville, S.C., Paula Kemp, 53, of Mount Pleasant, S.C, and Glenda Stone, of Goose Creek, S.C., whose age was not immediately available. Kemp, a mother of two and first-grade teacher at Mt. Pleasant Academy, made the trip by herself to get away and relax before school started, said her husband, Hank. "When it happened I kind of had a bad feeling when I didn't hear from her," Hank Kemp said in a telephone interview from his home. "She would have called to let me know she was all right." Hank Kemp said his wife "loved her kids. She loved God and she loved to teach." A phone listing for Carros was unpublished, according to the phone company. Thirty-one people were treated and released from a hospital after the Sunday morning wreck, said Valerie Morris, a spokeswoman for Harrah's. She said seven people who were on the bus remained hospitalized Monday. The bus was the only vehicle involved in the accident, which was under investigation, White said. The bus's roof partially collapsed in the rollover. Its windows were knocked out and the sides were caked in mud. White said it was raining at the time of the accident, but he would not speculate on the cause. The bus belonged to Harrah's Tunica and was carrying 43 people when it flipped over in a median at an intersection in Tunica, Tunica County spokesman Larry Liddell said. Tourists on the bus were headed to the airport for a chartered flight to South Carolina, where many were from, officials said. Four people still hospitalized at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven were in stable condition early Monday, said Thomas Whitehead, a hospital spokesman. One patient was transferred to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis in Tennessee because the patient was in immediate need of an operation and the facility in Desoto was full at the time. Whitehead said that patient also was in stable condition. Kathy Stringer, a spokeswoman at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, said two women were still hospitalized there. One was in critical condition Monday and the other was in serious. Those on the bus were among 131 people who flew to Mississippi on Friday night on a casino promotional trip, Morris said. Two other buses were headed for the airport at the time of the crash; their passengers flew back to South Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Lidell said the people returning Monday may be on a single chartered flight back to Charleston, though some may take commercial flights to other airports. Harrah's Entertainment operates 50 casinos worldwide, including three in Tunica: Harrah's Tunica, Horseshoe Casino and the Sheraton Casino & Hotel. The area along the Mississippi River in the northwest corner of the state is best known for its bustling casinos. ©2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved. What a sad e-mail I just received. A friend of mine from high school drops me a note every so often. In the email I got today she said her daughter and son
in-law are just devastated. She asked me if I had ever heard of Tunica and explained about the package tour her son-in-law's mother and her friend went on
recently. Her son-in-law's mother was only 53 and had been married 35 years. She was one of the people killed in the bus crash. They were returning to
the airport for a flight to Charleston, South Carolina when the bus flipped over. How sad to hear about a personal tie to that awful crash. It is a small
world.
The lady had a husband, children and mother who is in her 80's. My friend says the family is so devasted and will be totally lost without her. |

I am so sorry for the loss of life in the bus accident. You are so right. It is a small world, and sometimes, it even gets smaller. One just never knows
from one day to the next, what the day may bring. This is why we must make the most of every single day----and, be kind to one another.

It is so very sad. Here are a few more things she said about these two life long friends -
"They said they are still investigating the bus accident to determine what caused it. Apparently the bus slid sideways somehow and hit the median and then rolled on it's sides across the median and the across other side of the road and came to a stop right side up on the other side of the road. (The two ladies that were lifelong friends were 'G' who was killed and 'L', her friend ) Poor L, G's friend, is absolutely traumatized. They had been friends for over thirty years. Apparently G was sitting by the window and L was in the aisle seat and they were laughing and talking when the bus started sliding. When it stopped, there was only one person out of the 43 on the bus that didn't need to be hospitalized, and the three that died. The lady sitting right in front of L died too. They were all just in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were trying to get everyone out and accounted for and sending them off in ambulances and they couldn't find G. L refused to go to the hospital until they found G. L was hysterical and called her husband in S. Carolina on her cell phone and told him that the bus had wrecked and they couldn't find G. Then her husband called G's husband and told him. There was nothing on the news yet so that's all they knew. And then they finally found G's body under the bus! And then they had to call G's husband again and tell him that they had found her body. They had no details at all and couldn't find out anything. It was a huge mix-up. They were thinking "Memphis" because they were going to the Memphis airport and they were trying to call the Tennessee Highway Patrol to find out what happened, but it actually happened in Mississippi, so they were handling it. L was banged up with lots of cuts and bruises and spent a few days in the hospital, but she should be OK physically, but it's probably something she will never really get over. When you see the pictures of the bus, the roof is partly caved in and the sides were bulged out and all the windows were broken out. G was probably thrown out of the window while it was rolling. It's all too horrible to even imagine and that's one thing that's making it so hard on all of them." |

I still don't know why seatbelts are not required on buses, especially school buses. I used to do the senior bus trips. One line had seatbelts but the
other one didn't. After one ride on the one that didn't, I said that was the last time I would ride it. I know a seatbelt is uncomfortable but I think
it's necessary.
The last trip I took with the seniors was from Ypsilanti to Traverse Bay (Turtle Creek Casino), then to St Ignace in the UP (Kewadin Casino) and to our destination at Brimley, Michigan (Bay Mills Casino). It was November and anyone familiar with Michigan weather knows how unpredictable it can be when you're heading north. On the leg from Traverse City to St Ignace, it started snowing and sleeting. Visibility was only a few feet. Had it been my decision, I would have found accomodations for 40 people and held up for the night. But they didn't do that. I would have been happy to sleep on the bus as long as the bus was stationary. I was scared to death and most everyone else was also. That bus was all over the road. Luckily, there was no opposing traffic cause everyone else had enough sense to stay home in that weather. We made it safely there but the nerves were sure shot. I feel so sorry for the families involved in this accident. What started as a fun, relaxing trip turned into tragedy in a matter of seconds. Life is so quickly snuffed out. |
